Short Story for The Living 2
A thousand stars covered Yarden like a diamonds. He took out his lighter and started playing with the flame in the wind. A dog krept by. A hound of some sort. She was old and probably couldn't see the stars. Her eyes twinkled and Yarden gave the girl a hug. "good girl,"he whispered while her mouth dropped open in a drooling smile. Yarden didn't know if it would be better to take her home or leave her. She didn't have a collar with a tag on it. She was a bit matty and could have used a good bath. What would his father say? He watched her relieve herself by a bush and than fumble into the street. A car was coming and Yarde jumped out waving to tell it to stop. The dog looked back and smiled while the car screeched to a halt. Yarden felt is heart beating petrified of the outcome. She was too old to go very far. Yarden picked her up. She smelt like wet shoes and her fur felt oily.
He tucked her under his arm and started walking home. Homes lit up like butterscotch the warm light filled the rooms. One man sat on an old chair near a window reading. He saw children fighting and in the dark homes he wondered what went on there. Were they happy? Bruna, looked up at Yarden. She was drooling but Yarden managed to hold her such that it wouldn't fall on him.
When he got home his father's lamp was still on. The machines were still running so much that he hardly heard Bruna howl. That night, Yarden wanted to sleep with Bruna.
